Before full lock down, I had a feeling that I was going to need to add some tangible items to my Mommy bag of tricks. I invested in some new chapter books for my daughter, who LOVES reading. Turns out that I chose some that were actually graphic novels (totally wasn't paying attention apparently). No loss there, I love graphic novels so I figured I would read them for myself. In the process, I discovered they were genuinely appropriate for my daughter. I offered them to her and she DEVOURED them...my geek heart grew twice its size - my daughter is finally into graphic novels!!
Here are the titles that launched our mother/daughter adventure:
Zatanna and the House of Secrets by Matthew Cody and Yoshi Yoshitani
Diana: Princess of the Amazons by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale
Black Canary: Ignite by Meg Cabot and Cara McGee
Each of these titles are HIGHLY recommended by both myself and my daughter...and this got me thinking - what if I started a graphic novel book club for kids? That way she could share her love of books with her friends and it would be a great way for them to connect digitally during lock down. So that's what we're doing! We launched the Comics in My Life Kids Graphic Novel Club for a tight group of my daughter's friends who enjoy reading and are just starting to enjoy the graphic novel scene. We had our first meeting this past week and while it wasn't perfect it was a great start - we launched with Zatanna and the House of Secrets...and I've got more planned...but this coming week is going to be a Read and Share week - choose a graphic novel from your own collection, read/re-read it and then prepare to share it with the group.
So if YOU or your KIDDO would like to participate, drop a comment with your favorite kid appropriate graphic novel. Target age range for this section of the club is 8-12 years old. For now, the virtual meetings are limited capacity to ensure that each kiddo has the chance to speak but future cohorts could be made if there is enough interest.
